Karger Publishers trials GetFTR

The Swiss-based scientific and medical publisher is the first organisation to join the founding five publishers of GetFTR, supporting streamlined access to global journal literature

Karger Publishers has today announced that it will trial Get Full Text Research (GetFTR), a free-to-use solution that enables researchers to benefit from faster and streamlined access to content on and off campus, via affiliated discovery tools and scholarly platforms, across 2021.

Karger Publishers becomes the sixth publisher to provide entitlement information through GetFTR  and the first to trial the service alongside founding publishers, American Chemical Society, Elsevier,Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis Group, and Wiley. Karger Publishers will enable researchers, through affiliated discovery tools and scholarly platforms, to seamlessly access global journal literature.

GetFTR, announced in December 2019, is a free to use solution for integrators – discovery services and scholarly platforms) and researchers. It seeks to address the challenges around seamless access to research. When researchers are using affiliated discovery tools and collaboration networks to search for research articles, the GetFTR link is displayed next to the published content that the users’ institution has made available to them. Speeding up and simplifying authentication by making it clear which content they have access to, users just have to click the GetFTR link, taking them immediately from integration partner to published research, both on and off campus. Working across multiple publisher platforms, this supports a familiar and consistent experience for users. It directly speaks to addressing researcher fatigue, frustration and confusion when searching for content. GetFTR is fully integrated with platforms researchers are already using, so they do not need to register, opt-in, or download additional software to access content.

Speaking of the announcement, Daniel Ebneter, CEO at Karger Publishers, commented:

“One of our roles as a publisher is to support researchers with the development, delivery and access to high quality content. We continually strive to improve our user experience and convenience for our readers and users, as the health science community is in the center of everything we do. GetFTR is a part of this. By opening our content to GetFTR we strive for better discoverability and accessibility of content, saving time for our customers and researchers. Through the implementation of GetFTR, we hope to contribute towards preventing the usage of piracy platforms to access scientific content, thereby ensuring that researchers will continually and easily have access to trustworthy, up-to-date research information.”

Full implementation of Karger’s content with GetFTR was completed by the end of August 2020. Through the GetFTR trust mark, users are directed to full-text HTML articles.

Dianne Benham, GetFTR Product, further commented

“We are delighted that Karger Publishers has decided to trial GetFTR across its platforms, enabling us to collectively better support more streamlined access to high quality research. In this challenging time, when many of us are still working remotely, conversations around access to research among publishers, libraries, and scholarly discovery platforms around the globe are even more relevant. With the continued expansion and implementation of GetFTR, we hope to continue to improve that journey to access and remove barriers for researchers.”

Since its announcement in 2019, GetFTR has welcomed over six new integrators including Mendeley, Figshare and Dimensions. It is currently in the pilot phase and continues to take feedback from integrators, publishers, researchers and Scholarly Collaboration Networks on its development.

If you would like to join the pilot more information can be found on GetFTR.com.
