30th June 2025
As GetFTR celebrates its fifth anniversary, we have been reflecting on how far we’ve come and how we continue to grow. Our journey was recently shared in a webinar – replay available here!
Here’s a roundup of the latest updates and developments.
Product Update
Display License Information
GetFTR now provides licensing details (type, Creative Commons link, and start date). This information can be used by discovery tools and other integrators to inform researchers how they can use the content. The browser extension will be the first to show licenses when hovering on the GetFTR button – get in touch if you would like this feature in your integration.
Preprint Servers: Links to the Version of Record
Preprint servers can now integrate with GetFTR to provide researchers with streamlined access to the latest, peer-reviewed version where they have access, even if they haven’t installed the browser extension.
Drop-In GetFTR Buttons for Faster Integrations
If you’re keen to integrate with GetFTR in your tool, you can now come onboard quicker with our new drop-in GetFTR buttons feature. Just add a simple script, and buttons will appear to indicate full-text availability and provide streamlined access.
Save to Reference Manager via the GetFTR Browser Extension
Researchers can now utilize the GetFTR Browser Extension to download and save links to a folder or reference manager of their choice, with a direct integration to Mendeley and others coming soon. The save feature can be found by hovering on the GetFTR button. Read more here.
Feedback Needed for New Propositions
We’re testing a prototype to support library workflows and provide better insight into institutional holdings. Early feedback is positive – contact us to get involved!
We’re also planning prototypes for publisher and integrator benchmarking tools, author and funder tools. Stay tuned!
New Integrations
Integrations this quarter were primarily focussed on the Retraction and Errata feature with Taylor & Francis, Society of Exploration Geologists (SEG) and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) all displaying retraction and errata indicators in their references so that researchers can see the status of cited research directly from the reference list. Thanks to Atypon for helping all three of these clients implement this feature.
Additionally, working together with Highwire, we have set up Life Sciences Alliance and Cochrane so that they’re able to access reports from the GetFTR portal.
Events
Browser Extension Promotion
We encourage all publishers and librarians to promote the GetFTR Browser Extension through your networks to ensure your researchers are able to easily access the content that has been made available to them, wherever they discover it. We have a number of resources to help you promote the service – click here. We would love to hear from you if you want to discuss how we can better support you in your efforts
And finally…
As part of our 5 year anniversary celebrations, we interviewed representatives from our founding publishers to ask them to reflect on the last 5 years and talk about their predictions for the future on GetFTR. The article was published in Research Information and you can read it here.
