What is Get Full Text Research (GetFTR)?

GetFTR is a free-to-use solution that seeks to address the challenges around streamlining access to research.

When researchers are using affiliated discovery tools and collaboration networks to search for research, the GetFTR link is displayed next to the published journal articles that the users’ institution has made available to them, both on- and off-campus. Libraries and researchers do not need to opt-in, register, or download any new software to start using GetFTR.

Speeding up and simplifying authentication by making it clear which content they have access to, users click the GetFTR link, taking them immediately from the integration partner to published research.

An initial group of five publishers have funded its development: American Chemical Society, Elsevier, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis Group and Wiley.

Who can use GetFTR?

GetFTR aims to be compatible with all of today’s research discovery tools, scientific collaboration networks and library management systems. It is developed to integrate into the tools researchers are already using as part of their usual research workflow.

GetFTR checks and links to entitled content, enabling integrators to signpost user’s entitlements wherever they display an article record. It relies on authoritative publisher entitlements data with zero configuration effort for libraries.

For researchers, this minimizes paywalls and “access denied” experiences to the Version of Record. They do not need to register, opt-in, or download additional software but simply click on the GetFTR trustmark when it appears next to a journal article link, within the discovery and collaboration services who have integrated GetFTR technology.

For librarians, publishers and integrators, it puts content in front of the researcher, where and when they need it by streamlining access to the best available version that researchers are entitled to, whether subscription or open access.

How does GetFTR work?

The GetFTR service is built on trusted technology. Whilst still in pilot phase, it currently supports the federated access authentication method and is incrementally rolling out supporting IP authentication through 2020. The addition of IP authentication will ensure a broader range of institutions can benefit from GetFTR. Both authentication methods will enable the display of the GetFTR indicator within research discovery services and collaboration networks.

GetFTR offers:

  1. A single API where journal article entitlements from all participating publishers can be checked.
  2. Direct, deep links to full text journal content, which automatically signs users in if necessary.
  3. Links to alternative versions of that content for non-entitled users, as provided by publisher partners.
  4. A simple, consistent user experience for discovery services to use on their sites and for researchers to recognise.
  5. Journal article links returned for open access, free and entitled subscription content, supporting ever greater dissemination of research to a global community.

What makes GetFTR different from other features and tools that offer rapid access to research?

Unlike other solutions, GetFTR provides researchers with accurate, real-time entitlements information from participating publishers’ websites and rapid access to the trusted, publisher-approved source of information.

It integrates with the discovery platforms and collaboration networks researchers are already using, so they do not need to register, opt-in, or download additional software to access content. Researchers, and libraries, do not need to take any action to use GetFTR, beyond clicking the GetFTR indicator in integrated discovery services and collaboration networks.

GetFTR can be used on devices both on- and off-campus, from any browser, without the need for additional software, removing the restrictions that limit the effectiveness of other solutions.

What are the benefits of GetFTR for librarians?

Librarians handle lots of queries (and complaints) from users about getting access to library collections. They see users increasingly turn to illicit methods to gain access to content.

Coupled with this, librarians face the challenge of having to constantly know how different publishers’ authentication works, and in turn are burdened with the responsibility of educating their users on these various systems and processes. In some cases, they are also tasked with manually entering publisher entitlement data into discovery systems, absorbing time, library budgets and potentially putting their institutions at risk.

GetFTR helps solve these challenges by eliminating the need to enter entitlement data manually, removing the need to continually educate user communities on login access to legal journal articles, and to understand the numerous ways publishers’ authentication processes work.

What are the benefits of GetFTR for researchers?

Researchers use a variety of scholarly collaboration networks, discovery platforms, and library portals to find published research relevant to their areas of interest.

They feel uncertainty, experience frustration and waste time browsing results and clicking through to publisher websites, not knowing if they have access to the research. This drives many researchers to alternative online sources that may be unreliable, may distribute research illicitly, and may lack key material, such as data. GetFTR aims to solve this problem.

Once GetFTR is integrated in a discovery tool or scholarly collaboration platform, researchers can easily tell from search results which content their institution has made available to them through the visual GetFTR trustmark. They can follow the enhanced links provided by GetFTR to rapidly access research on publisher websites.

To benefit from GetFTR researchers do not need to do anything; there is no need to register, opt-in, or download additional software to use its functionality to access content.

For users who do not have access based upon their institutional affiliation, participating publishers can provide access to an alternative version of the research, which will go beyond the abstract, enabling the user to better understand the nature of the article (e.g. a preprint).

Can GetFTR track what users are searching and reading?

No information that could personally identify a user is passed to GetFTR, and no information about the user’s search terms is revealed.

GetFTR only receives DOIs and information that uniquely identifies the user’s institution. In addition, GetFTR has no visibility to what links a user clicks in a discovery service.

When clicking on GetFTR links, the user goes directly to the publisher’s website and is redirected to the user’s home institution for authentication. GetFTR is not involved in article retrieval in any way.

Does GetFTR work with library link resolvers?

No, not yet. However, we are actively exploring how this use case could be supported in the future. At the moment, discovery services can use GetFTR alongside link resolvers.

How much does GetFTR cost?

GetFTR can be integrated free of charge into discovery tools, scholarly platforms and library management systems.

There is no cost for libraries, institutions, researchers or integrating platforms.

GetFTR will be sustained through financial contributions from participating publishers on a tiered structure, according to the volume of published output.
